Online Financial Education Program for Grades 4-6

Purpose

This Middle School Financial Education course is a personalized finance course dedicated to empowering middle school students to develop healthy financial habits and to act as informed consumers throughout their lifetime.

Solution

The five modules in this course are based on the National Jump$tart standards and the 21st Century Skills. Financial building block recommendations are from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and are incorporated into each section.

This course consists of five modules, each spanning 15 minutes of play-time. Through a variety of interactive lessons, students learn several ways to make smart financial decisions, create a spending and budget plan, explore income and careers, approach credit and borrowing, and plan for their own future.

Although each module presents a different subject, each follows a similar flow:

  1. Pre-assessment questions.
  2. Introduction to the topic and connection to the overarching theme.
  3. A series of interactive games and decision-based activities that relate to the lesson and allow students to explore, make mistakes, and ultimately lead them down a path resulting in financial well-being.
  4. The Keystone Activity that challenges the learner to practice new learning from the module in a full game allowing for failure, replayability, and gradual improvement.
  5. Final reflection to self-assess.
  6. And finally at the end of the module students take their post-assessment and are guided back to the home screen in order to move onto the next lesson.

Through an engaging storyline, diverse cast of characters, and highly interactive activities, this course teaches students about fundamental financial topics while bringing learners through a non-linear experience. This ultimately connects soft skills with financial learning in order to challenge students to make difficult decisions using their critical thinking skills.

The five modules in this course are based on the National Jump$tart standards and 21st Century Skills. Financial building block recommendations are from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and are incorporated into each section.
