Workplace Violence Prevention

Purpose

This course prepares learners to feel safe at work despite the risks of workplace violence, knowing that their employer has policies to prevent it and what to do if they witness or experience violence.

Solution

Though the course doesn’t intend to replace employers’ need to create comprehensive safety programs, it aims to address increased fear of workplace violence and employees’ mental and emotional struggles.

The course consists of eight online modules, including six core non-supervisory modules, one supervisory module, and the other the deployable active shooter module. Modules define workplace violence, inform learners how to recognize it, teach principles to prevent it, advise how to respond to it (including an active shooter situation), and outline relevant leadership responsibilities.

Content in each module follows a scaffolded approach, where critical introductory concepts are followed by more advanced information and practice. Instruction and assessment are provided just in time, encouraging learners to explore and experiment to complete the activity or move to the next section of content.

Though the course doesn’t intend to replace employers’ need to create comprehensive safety programs, it aims to address increased fear of workplace violence and employees’ mental and emotional struggles—educating learners on the risks of violence at the workplace, and the actions they can take that are in their control.
